Starting Your Apprenticeship? Here's Your Workwear Sorted

September's nearly here, and for thousands of new apprentices across the country, that means one thing: first day on site. New trade, new team, new tools, and a fair bit to think about before you've even picked up a spanner.

Workwear shouldn't be the bit that stresses you out. Turn up in the right gear and you'll feel the part from the moment you walk through the gate, even if you're still finding your feet with everything else. Here's what to get sorted before day one.

The Basics Every Apprentice Needs

Every trade's different. A sparkie's kit list won't look the same as a joiner's or a bricklayer's, and that's fine, you'll build up the specifics as you go. But there's a core kit that covers you on pretty much any site, whatever you're training in:

Work trousers. Tough enough for the job, flexible enough that you can actually move. Reinforced knees and stress points matter more than they sound like they would, and kneepad pockets are worth having even if you don't fill them straight away.

Safety footwear. Non-negotiable. Steel or composite toe caps, and don't skimp on the grip either, since a wet site floor and smooth soles are a bad combination.

Hi-vis. Most sites won't let you past the gate without it. A vest covers you in the warmer months; a hi-vis jacket earns its keep once fewer people wear t-shirts in the mornings.

Weather protection. The UK weather does what it wants, so a proper waterproof or softshell needs to live in your bag, not just your wardrobe.

GS Workwear's Apprentice Starter Kit

We've picked out the kit that covers those basics, all in one place.

Tips From the GS Workwear Team

A few things worth knowing before day one, from people who've been there:

Break your boots in early. Wear them round the house or on a dog walk before your first shift. Blisters by lunchtime on day one is not the impression you're going for.

Pack a spare pair of socks. Always. Wet feet ruin a day faster than almost anything else, and you can never have too many in your bag.

Layer properly. Moisture-wicking base, warm mid-layer, waterproof on top. Add or strip layers as the day changes rather than overheating in one jacket.

Nerves on day one are normal, everyone's had them. The right kit won't do the job for you, but it'll mean you're not thinking about cold feet or a soaked jacket when you should be focused on learning the trade.
